These American Cities Are the Most Fun Destinations

Crime is a sociological phenomenon, and statistics don't consider the influences of numerous economic and social issues.

What makes a state dangerous, and what statistics determine the score? The FBI gathers information from law enforcement agencies across the country, calculating crime cases per 100,000 people to determine the most dangerous states. When the numbers come together, they can help form a clearer picture of where and what kinds of criminal activity occur. Keep in mind, however, that numbers don't always tell the whole story. Crime is a sociological phenomenon, and statistics don't consider the influences of numerous economic and social issues.
<h2>1. Alaska: America's Most Dangerous State</h2>
The vast Alaskan wilderness is a mostly rural landscape with limited access to roads and services in many towns. In 2019, 867 crimes occurred per 100,000 people, and the desolate landscape is undoubtedly one of the contributing factors. Women are at a higher risk of experiencing violence, specifically Native Alaskan women. A lack of economic opportunity greatly affects the crime rate, with 2018 having the highest unemployment rate in correlation with soaring crime. Many of the violent crimes reported occurred at home, suggesting that Alaska's high unemployment and substance abuse rates are significant factors.

Illegal drug trades make Albuquerque the 9th most dangerous city in America, which heavily contributes to a high crime rate in the state. In 2019, 832 incidents of crime per 100,000 residents were reported in New Mexico. This state also has rising poverty rates and very few social programs, which undoubtedly increase inner-state violence.

<h2>3. Tennessee</h2>
Memphis is the third most dangerous city in America, a relevant factor in Tennessee's higher-than-average statistics. About 595 out of every 100,000 people were victims of violent crimes in 2019, a third of which happened in Memphis. It's good that rates are on a downtrend after a steady incline from 2013 to 2017. Tennessee's poverty rate is also among the highest in the nation.

Arkansas' crime rates were on a downward trend in 2018, but 2019 saw a spike in violent crimes, rising to 584 crimes per capita. One reason could be that Arkansas has one of the country's highest poverty rates despite ranking below the national average in unemployment. Consequently, the state also has a higher percentage of incarcerations than over a dozen more populous states. Most violent crimes occur in metropolitan areas, especially Arkansas' most dangerous city, West Memphis.

Louisiana has the highest imprisonment rate in the country and also one of the highest poverty rates. These conditions are likely adding to Louisiana's crime levels, which increased in 2019 to affect 549 of every 100,000 people. Another contributing factor is the elevated unemployment rate, which was especially high in 2018. It's not uncommon for crime to occur in areas with limited economic opportunities, such as fewer jobs.

Although violent crimes have decreased significantly over the past decade, South Carolina's numbers hit a six-year high in 2019. About 511 out of every 100,000 people experienced violent crime, with significant increases in homicides. South Carolina also has some of the highest incidents of aggravated assault. It's impossible to ignore the state's higher-than-average poverty rates under these circumstances, considering that most of these offenses occurred at a residence.

Violent crimes in Alabama are gradually declining, but the state remains one of the most dangerous, with 510 people per capita experiencing violence in 2019. Crimes against women are slightly increasing, with the majority of incidents happening at home or school. Alabama's above-average incarceration and poverty rates might have something to do with these numbers. Birmingham is Alabama's largest city, but shockingly, this area has a lower percentage of crime than some of the state's smaller towns.

In 2019, Missouri saw a slight decrease in violent crime, with 495 offenses per capita, though homicide and incarceration rates are rising. St. Louis is the second most dangerous city in the country and inspired the Department of Justice to launch Operation Legend in 2020. This movement was named for a young boy who died tragically in a shooting. The initiative is a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies to fight violent crime in St. Louis. Operation Legend has since spread to other cities, including Memphis and Albuquerque.

Despite making this list, things are looking better in Nevada. In 2019, approximately 493 out of every 100,000 people experienced violent crime, a drastic reduction in the state's numbers from a decade ago. Declining rates of murder and robbery contributed to the improved statistics, although rising sexual abuse cases were a cause for concern in 2018. Most violent crimes took place in Nevada's metropolitan centers, with North Las Vegas ranked the state's most dangerous city.

Violent crime is down in Arizona, with 455 cases of violence per 100,000 people reported in 2019. While the number of violent crimes is declining, rates of sexual abuse are relatively higher with minimal improvement. Prison populations grew twice as fast as the state's population in the last two decades, which scholars fear is doing communities more harm than good.

Even with meticulous planning, a road trip isn't complete without a few barriers and unknowns. <h2>1. Get real with your expectations</h2>
Whether you're driving a motor home or towing a camping trailer, RV travel is nothing like driving a car. Aside from the responsibility of maneuvering such a vehicle, you also have to deal with surrounding traffic that may not be willing to share the road. These factors can add stress to your trip, so cut yourself some slack and set realistic goals. Rather than aiming for 400 miles a day, shoot for 200 to 300 miles instead. Give yourself time to decompress at the end of each long haul.

Just 45 minutes from Los Angeles, Catalina Island lies 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. Catch a boat from San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, or Dana Point to get there. An hour later, you’ll be exploring the island. Arrange for a sightseeing tour via bicycle or helicopter. Or, rent a golf cart and explore Catalina on your own. Often considered the birthplace of the nation, Philadelphia, PA is where the Declaration of Independence was signed, among many other important events throughout the American Revolution. Here, you can visit the Independence National Historical Park, where the old Pennsylvania State House is now known as Independence Hall. Phili is also home to the Liberty Bell that legend says rung throughout the town when the Declaration of Independence was announced publicly on July 8, 1776. Traveling, for many people, is one of life’s great joys. The opportunity to seek adventures in unexplored places, discover cultures, and try new foods from far away lands, can be exciting and fun. But not everyone enjoys leaving their home-sweet-homes. Studies show that a desire to travel may be stronger for residents of some states than it is for others. Researchers ranked each state from most to least-traveled, based on the amount of traveling its residents did.
<h2>1. California, most well-traveled</h2>
With easy access to airports, California residents are the most well-traveled. Many amazing travel destinations are just a short flight away from many of the state’s largest cities, so it’s easier to plan a quick getaway, a short vacation, or an overnight stay. Airlines provide just under 1700 flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco each week, making it easy to get out of town for a couple of days. One study found that a significant number of Los Angelenos head to Reno, Nevada, to grab some time away from it all.

<h2>2. Connecticut, second most well-traveled</h2>
The Constitution State has the second-highest number of travelers. Researchers found that more people from Connecticut travel because they have the financial means to do so. Bradley International, just outside of Hartford, is one of the busiest airports in New England. Thousands of Connecticuters start there and head to the state’s southeastern coast for a weekend stay at the historic and charming waterfront village of Mystic.

Millions of people travel to Illinois each year. A higher percentage of those visitors are there for leisure, rather than business purposes in recent years. A 2016 study found that more than half of the state’s travelers originate from inside Illinois’ borders. Not surprisingly, Chicago is one of the top destinations in the state. Where do Illinoisans go when they want to take a break? Many head to beautiful destinations like Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, or Saugatuck, Michigan. The gorgeous natural surroundings provide the perfect environments for rest and relaxation.

<h2>4. Nevada, fourth-most well-traveled</h2>
Residents of Nevada are well-aware of the importance of travel and tourism. It supports around 370,000 local jobs, about 40% of the jobs in Southern Nevada. In 2019 alone, 42.5 million people headed to Las Vegas. Another five million landed in Reno, but only 4% of those were from Nevada. The largest alpine lake in North America, Lake Tahoe, straddles the state line between California and Nevada. Both states earn tourism dollars from those visiting the resort area. Some of those are spent by Nevadans, who venture across the border to the California side of the lake seeking some downtime.

<h2>5. Florida, fifth-most well-traveled state</h2>
Floridians love to travel, and there’s no shortage of destinations within their state to satisfy their wanderlust. Orlando and its theme parks may be a big draw for tourists from other states or countries, but it’s not the top choice for residents. Floridians prefer the hidden gems across the state. Instead of heading to the crowded beaches in Fort Lauderdale, they choose Deerfield Beach instead. Those who want to spend some quiet time with nature can fish off the International Fishing Pier there.

In the Sooner State, tourism is the third-largest industry. The state’s travel industry is working hard to attract more international visitors, especially those from Australia and New Zealand. But chances are, they won’t see the best parts of Oklahoma. Most Oklahoma residents avoid traveling unless it is to a site inside the state. Lendonwood Gardens in Grove, Sequoyah State Park in Cherokee County, and Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve in Osage Country are just a few favorite destinations for Oklahomans.

<h2>7. Kentucky, fourth-least well-traveled state</h2>
While tourism ads push bourbon tastings and food tours in Kentucky, most residents aren’t taking part in those activities. Around 70 million people travel here each year and keep the tourism dollars flowing, spending an average of just under $300 per day. But locals prefer weekend day trips and family outings within the Bluegrass State instead of traveling elsewhere or taking extended trips. The Cumberland Plateau in the northeastern part of the state is home to the 125,000-acre Big South National River and Recreation Area, perfect for camping, hiking, and exploring.

<h2>8. West Virginia, third least well-traveled state</h2>
This state has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, and it’s easy to see why so many travelers make plans to visit. But the survey shows that people in West Virginia prefer to take in their own state’s natural wonders rather than exploring other parts of the country. Blackwater Falls State Park is a top destination. West Virginians also head to Charles Town, one of West Virginia’s oldest settlements, to spend the day. East of Charles Town is the Hollywood Casino and Charles Town Races, a horse racing facility, which makes a fun day trip or weekend outing.

The states were ranked, and the results are in! According to statistics — such as the number of people who have moved away and vocal pride of residents — each U.S. state was scored and ordered. <h2>1. New Jersey</h2>
It seems strange that the state boasting the first brewery and the first baseball game would be the most maligned in the country. What happened between now and then to make this the most hated state in the nation?

The states' ratings incorporated many factors, including how many people have moved out. In 2020, 69 percent of the population of New Jersey left, and this number is expected to grow in the coming years. People have also expressed public dislike for the state, with New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut loudest in their protests. As New Jersey is a major entryway into New York City, some of the heaviest complaints regard the New Jersey highway system. Tolls are everywhere, and the main thoroughfare is constantly congested. This isn't necessarily New Jersey's fault, as the best access to Manhattan is through New Jersey, but it doesn't help.

Perhaps, if the state can sort out that highway system, New Jersey, and its long-time combination of city and country life, will begin to climb back up the list.

At first glance, it seems that Texans aren't the reason this state is the second most hated state in the nation. Many Texans polled responded with positive thoughts about their state. How, then, did it make it to number two on the list?

The hatred comes from people outside the state. Texas has a proud cowboy culture that includes football, guns, and oil. California, a liberal state, leads the way when it comes to hating Texas. Additionally, when Texas does something, it goes big — good or bad. Dallas was once the murder capital of the world, and most people have heard of the Waco siege in the early 1990s. Other states like to claim that Texas has no culture, though many argue it has one of the most diverse populations in the country.

Luckily, though Texas may be hated by the rest of the nation, within its borders, there is a deep sense of happiness and state pride.

Politicians are blamed for the decline in the school system, the overcrowded highway system, the issues with homelessness, and much more.

California has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the nation. It houses some of the richest industries, such as Hollywood to the south and wineries to the north, and has a diverse topography. However, the perception of bad politics is giving the state an overall bad name. Perhaps the residents will replace their leaders, giving California a second chance.

Add in the crazy weather, such as tornadoes, earthquakes, and wildfires, and it's easier to see why this state ranks low on popularity contents. However, with a low cost of living, beautiful lakes, and diverse cultural opportunities, Oklahoma may stand a chance at bouncing back.

A big reason is the weather. It is hot in Florida year-round, which has made the state a thriving habitat for a wide variety of bugs, reptiles, and other pests. Getting relief on one of Florida's overcrowded beaches isn't always an option, either. The state is beautiful, with beaches, swamps, and some of the most interesting wild animals in the nation. However, it is simply too small for everything packed into it. Many believe it's nice for a visit, but not the best place to live.

Ohioans are the most vocal about their dislike of the state of Michigan. The intense college football rivalry between the University of Michigan and Ohio State University isn't the only reason. The two states had a cold war battle between 1835 and 1836, called the Toledo War. Both sides claimed a small strip of land, the Toledo Strip. The only casualty was the stabbing of a Michigan deputy sheriff who attempted to arrest an Ohioan following a skirmish. The deputy recovered, yet the rivalry between the two states remains today. But some Michiganders aren't crazy about their state. State pride stands at a meager 28%.

There's no love lost between fans of the Indiana University Hoosiers and the University of Tennessee Volunteers, and they're pretty vocal about their dislike of University of Kentucky Wildcat devotees.

When it comes to choosing political leaders, a majority of the eligible voting population of New Hampshire shows up. A study used 2016 numbers for voter participation to determine patriotic rankings. New Hampshire ranked third in voter turnout. The state also gets high marks for civics education, teaching school-age residents about the importance of political and community life. Around 36% of New Hampshire residents volunteer. Although the state ranked on the lower side for military engagement issues and jury participation, it took the number one spot for patriotism due to its higher civic rankings.

<h2>7. North Dakota</h2>
While the military doesn’t have a strong presence in The Peacegarden State, North Dakota did earn fifth place for civic engagement, primarily for high voter turnout in 2016. These numbers helped boost the state to number seven on the patriotic state list. Volunteer numbers aren’t the highest in North Dakota, however. Around 200 people served in organizations like AmeriCorps or the Senior Corps in 2019. Less than 1% of the state’s population enlists in the military, and 8% of its population are veterans, which led to its ranking of 31st in military engagement.

<h2>8. Wisconsin</h2>
The Badger State earned a respectable 8th place ranking as one of the country’s top patriotic states. While it scored a low 42nd for military engagement, Wisconsin earned second place for its civic engagement. Volunteerism is thriving across the state. The Milwaukee metro area ranked 4th in the nation in 2017 for volunteer efforts, with more than 44% of its citizens donating their time to help others. Wisconsin also had the second-highest number of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election.

<h2>9. Minnesota</h2>
With one of the lowest numbers of military enlistees, Minnesota landed at number 47 on the list for military engagement. In 2018, there were only 597 active military personnel across the state, and around 7% of its population are veterans. While Minnesota may not be known for its military presence, it does have one of the largest volunteer rates in the country. These numbers, along with high voter turnout for the 2016 general election, helped the state achieve an overall ranking of ninth on the patriotism scale and fourth for civic engagement.

<h2>10. South Carolina</h2>
Ranked third for the number of military enlistees, South Carolina contributes more than 50% of its eighteen-to-twenty-four-year-old population to military service, which is the highest in the nation. The state also has one of the largest veteran populations at 9.3%. These numbers landed South Carolina with a third-place ranking for military engagement and helped propel it to number 10 among the country’s most patriotic states.
