When packing, don’t overdo it. While some airlines have no weight limits, others do. And, some carriers are charging extra fees if your carry-on goes over the weight limit. Check the airline’s website before packing your bag, and if you’re a frequent flyer, invest in a small luggage scale to ensure you’re not overdoing it. Stick to packing the essential comforts and valuables in your carry-on.

Carry-ons can be your best friend or the bane of your existence. Find a wheeled version, preferably with four wheels, for better maneuverability through crowds. It should also be light enough to carry over rough terrains like cobblestones or rough roads. But most importantly, adhere to the airline’s size restrictions for a carry-on. Most airlines require that they are no larger than 22 by 14 by 9-inches, although some require smaller. That includes both the handle and the wheels.

No matter how closely you’ve followed the rules for carry-ons, don’t be shocked if you’re gate-checked. If a flight is particularly crowded, or if a smaller aircraft is used, the airline may require you to check your carry-on along with your other luggage. Keep all your important stuff, like medications, travel documents, and valuables, on your person a purse or a backpack. Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you to qualify. If it doesn’t, it’s a carry-on.

More airlines, both domestic and international carriers, are now charging a fee for carry-ons, and others don’t allow them at all on lower-cost flights. These fees usually range between $10 and $75. Some airlines unbundle their flight costs so that when you search online for a good deal, you don’t see the added price for carry-ons or other fees. It’s not unusual for the cost of the flight to be less than those extra fees they charge for carry-ons, checked bags, seat selection, or priority boarding. Most travelers know their carry-on will be searched or scanned. Making it easy on the security folks makes it easier for everyone, including those waiting behind you in line. Leave full-size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotions, sunscreen, or other liquids and gels at home. Airports around the world allow only bottles that hold no more than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters. That includes bottled water, too. If you need a beverage, purchase it after the security check, not before it. There may be some exceptions for food or essential medications if you have children, so check with the airline beforehand. You can carry a single, one-liter sealed plastic bag of liquid or gel-filled containers.

Airlines are urging passengers to keep valuable items with them at all times instead of packing them in their checked baggage. As air traffic ramps up, airports are reporting more incidents of baggage theft, so it’s important to safeguard your travel documents, jewelry, and other valuables in your carry-on or personal item instead of locking them in your checked baggage.

<h2>8. Don’t forget to pack medications</h2>
For domestic flights, you can bring your medication with you in your carry-on without declaring it, and it doesn’t have to be in its prescription bottle. Some states require proper labeling, however. Declare all medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols. Be aware that rules vary from country to country, and you could be violating laws if you haven’t reviewed them. For example, it is illegal to bring inhalers and certain allergy medications into the country in Japan. Check with the U.S. embassy in your destination country to get a list of allowed medications.

Packing a suitcase might seem simple enough—but learning a few key strategies can mean the difference between a stressful journey and a streamlined one. Checked baggage fees, weight restrictions, delays, cancellations, and crazy waits at the luggage carousel are just a few reasons why packing light is so popular these days. Whether you’re headed for a three-day business trip or a month-long expedition, knowing the best ways to minimize your load, maximize your suitcase space and pack efficiently will smooth most of the wrinkles out of your next trip.
<h2>1. Go small</h2>
The larger your suitcase, the more you’ll be tempted to stuff into it. Stop yourself from overpacking by limiting yourself to a suitcase no taller than 22 inches, with hard sides and a structured shell.

Bear in mind that even a carry-on that’s well within the airline’s size limits can easily become oversized if you use expanding features, or stuff every compartment.

<h2>2. Edit ruthlessly</h2>
Jot down a packing list several days before your trip to give yourself time to grab any last-minute items. Make sure you have enough room for the absolute essentials, then be extremely selective with the rest of it. Your suitcase is like an exclusive VIP nightclub, and you’re the hard-nosed bouncer there to keep the riff-raff out.

<h2>3. Keep it simple with the countdown rule</h2>
Packing for a weeklong trip is as easy as 5-4-3-2-1. Limit yourself to no more than five pairs of socks and undergarments, four tops, three bottoms, two pairs of shoes, and one hat. This rule can obviously be adjusted depending on your needs. For example, you can swap out the hat for a swimsuit, fancy dress, or suit jacket.

<h2>4. Heavy things first</h2>
Once you’ve laid out everything you need, start by packing your heaviest items first. Place them toward the side of the suitcase with the wheels, which is the bottom of the suitcase when it’s standing upright. This ensures your suitcase isn’t top-heavy, and your items won’t tumble around as much in your case either.

<h2>5. Pack like Tetris</h2>
The best way to fit all your items into one bag? Make a game of it! Your aim is to fill every inch of space.
<ul>
 	<li>Stuff your socks into your shoes, then lay them together heel to toe, and put them in your shower cap or a plastic shopping bag to protect your clothing.</li>
 	<li>Use your glasses case to store small items.</li>
 	<li>Wrap your belt in the collar of your shirt to keep it stiff—or snake it around the perimeter of your suitcase.</li>
 	<li>Tuck your underwear into the cups of your bra.</li>
 	<li>Wear your bulkiest items if possible, such as your jacket, sweatshirt, and jeans.</li>

<h2>6. Go beyond the fold</h2>
How you decide to pack your clothing items in your suitcase is entirely up to you, but there are several strategies favored by seasoned travelers.

 	<li>Roll your clothes instead of folding. This not only prevents wrinkles, but it maximizes space.</li>
 	<li>Use packing cubes. These zipped containers keep your items carefully organized, easily accessible, and neatly compact.</li>
 	<li>Use the bundle technique. Wrap each clothing item carefully around a central core: T-shirts, bras, and underwear form the central core, while larger items, like dresses or blazers, form the outer layer.</li>

<h2>7. Keep toiletries in the bag</h2>
Keep your travel bathroom products and other daily essentials packed at all times, and start living out of your toiletry bag before departure. This will ensure that you don’t leave behind any essentials you might need on the morning of your flight, like your toothbrush or contact lens supplies.

Streamline your personal products as much as possible. A BB cream, for example, is an all-in-one product which replaces moisturizer, foundation, and sunscreen.

Always pack toiletries in a clear bag, and rest the bag on top of your belongings. You never know when security might be compelled to scrutinize your stuff, so you’re better off keeping liquids easily reachable and separate from your other items. If you’re using ziplock bags, you might want to double up to prevent leaks.

<h2>8. Leave the kid gear at home</h2>
If you have young children, spending a little extra to rent or buy what you need when you arrive beats forking over cash for checked baggage fees and added hassle. Car seats, cribs, and other baby gear are usually available to rent at hotels, and you can buy snacks, formula, and sunscreen at your destination. The only exception? Diapers. Pack <i>more</i> than you think you need, and then some. You never know when your flight will be delayed.

<h2>9. Label it</h2>
Label your suitcase with your name, email, phone number, and the address of your destination so the airline can reach you if your luggage gets lost. Label your carry-on too—you never know if you’ll have to gate check it in the event of a sold-out flight. It’s also a good idea to tuck a piece of paper with your address <i>inside</i> your bag too, just in case your luggage tag falls off.

If your suitcase is black, just like pretty much everyone else’s, add a colorful ribbon or fancy duct tape to the handle. This way, nobody will mistake your black bag for theirs on the baggage carousel.

Once your bag is fully packed, carry it by the handle for a while. Try rolling it down the street and hauling it up and down the stairs. This will give you a preview of what it will feel like to actually travel with your suitcase. <h2>1. Choose the right backpack</h2>
The most critical thing about traveling with just a backpack is—you guessed it! The backpack. Traveling light is inexpensive, but this is <i>not</i> the time to go cheap. You don't want your only luggage to fall apart within the first few days of your adventure. Nor do you want a bag that you realize hurts your shoulders while you're still at the airport. For this reason, you'll want to physically try on a variety of backpacks instead of ordering one online and crossing your fingers.

Base the size of your pack on your itinerary. If you'll only be away for a weekend, a 30-liter bag is fine, but go with 35 liters for a week-long trip. More than a week, and you'll want a 45-liter capacity. Bear in mind that the standard airline carry-on restriction only allows for 55 liters.

<h2>8. Follow the "rule of three"</h2>
If you're not sure how much of each type of clothing to pack, limit yourself to three of each. That means you only pack three pairs of jeans or bottoms, three T-shirts, three pairs of shorts, etc. You'll have one to wear today, a spare you can wear tomorrow and one that is being washed and dried.

<h2>9. Roll baby roll</h2>
Instead of folding your clothes, or worse, stuffing them into your backpack, simply roll them up. You'll be amazed at how much extra room you'll have in your bag after you do this. It also makes it much easier to find something without having to dump the entire contents of your bag out. Best of all, no wrinkles!

<h2>10. Get organized</h2>
You don't want to spend half your trip rummaging through your bag to fish out what you need. That gets old pretty quick.

A backpack with plenty of built-in interior pockets and compartments helps with organization. You might also want to look into packing cubes to keep your bag neat and tidy for the duration of your trip. Many seasoned travelers swear by them.

If you don't want to bother with that, ziplock bags will usually do the trick.

Understandably, you're tempted to pack your holy grail shampoo. We've all been there. But unless you're going completely off the grid, you can free up a ridiculous amount of space by simply buying all your toiletries at your destination. Even the most seasoned minimalist travelers usually tote along a toothbrush, toothpaste, and antiperspirant⁠—basic hygiene stuff⁠—but any basic personal products you use at home are readily available all over the world. They might even be cheaper.

<h2>12. Accessories: go small, or leave it home!</h2>
The key is to minimize everything you bring, both in size and in quantity. If you can access your favorite social media apps and the internet on your smartphone, you probably won't miss your laptop or tablet on your travels. And, unless you're a professional photographer, the camera on your phone can stand in just fine for your bulky DSLR and all those lenses. This rule applies to pretty much everything, from electronics to toiletries to clothing<i>.</i>

<h2>13. Wear your heaviest clothing when traveling</h2>
Your jeans and jacket take up the most space in your backpack, so wear them when you're on the move. Make sure you are also wearing the heaviest pair of shoes you've packed, like sneakers or hiking boots. Wearing your bulkiest clothing will lighten your load considerably. If it's too hot to wear your jacket, just tie it around the straps of your backpack or wear it around your waist.

<h2>14. Never bring more than two pairs of shoes</h2>
Sure, having a shoe for every occasion is reassuring. But lugging around multiple pairs goes against the traveling light goal of backpack travel. Ideally, just bring one pair⁠—and wear them. Make sure they're both comfortable enough for walking all day, but stylish enough to wear out for a casual meal. If you<i> must</i> bring a second pair, pack dressy but lightweight shoes that can be worn for a nice evening meal or a night out. Many places have dress codes, so having a formal option on hand might open you up to a few more activities on your travels.

The exception to the two pair rule? A lightweight pair of flip-flops.

<h2>15. Invest in a quick-drying towel</h2>
If you're staying at a hotel, you can obviously skip this tip⁠—but microfiber travel towels are simply amazing. Not only are they lightweight and perfect for backpacks, they're just as absorbent as the fluffy bath towels you have at home. Plus, regular towels take forever to dry⁠—and musty luggage is <i>exactly</i> what you want when you're living out of a backpack, right?

Microfiber towels can even double as a beach towel if you find yourself in a tropical locale.

With proper packing, you'll transform the great outdoors into your temporary home in no time.

Whether you plan on sleeping under the stars in the wide-open desert or nestled among the trees in a national forest, camping can be a delightful experience. Sleeping, cooking, and relaxing outside is fun and stress-free if you have the right tools.

To make sure your outdoor adventure goes as smoothly as possible, it is crucial to be prepared. Nature is beautiful but sometimes unpredictable. A little preparation means you can spend more time with family and less time worrying. With proper packing, you'll transform the great outdoors into your temporary home in no time.
<h2>1. Shelter</h2>
The most important thing to have while camping is suitable shelter that provides protection, comfort, and security. Some people prefer to enjoy the outdoors in an RV or camper, while others want to be closer to nature and sleep outside. A high-quality camping tent is a great shelter option that will last for years.

Along with your tent, make sure to pack the necessary poles and stakes along with a mallet for securing the stakes into the ground. You may also want to consider bringing a sunshade or tarp for the top of your tent, ground cloth or tent footprint, doormat, and tent lights.

<h2>2. Bedding and furniture</h2>
Trust us when we say comfort is key. If the weather's ideal, why not opt for a traditional sleeping bag and travel pillows? For some extra softness and warmth, consider adding a sleeping pad, blankets, and sheets. Other fun bedding options are cots, hammocks, and air mattresses. Be sure to bring an air pump to quickly inflate the mattress.

For campsite furniture, stick to the basics and pack a couple of folding camp chairs and a folding table. You may also want to bring a tablecloth and clips, an outdoor rug, or sit pads for insulation on chairs.

Since Mother Nature can be unpredictable, it's best to pack enough clothes to prepare for any eventuality. Choose lightweight fabrics that are moisture-wicking so you can reuse the same pieces a few times. Depending on the climate, you may also want to include a heavy coat, gloves or mittens, specialty footwear, or an umbrella. Look for clothes that will keep you cool and protected from the sun during the day and warm and dry at night.

<h2>4. Toiletries and first aid</h2>
A few everyday items should be on everyone's packing list, such as shampoo, biodegradable soap, hairbrush, floss, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. Don't forget to pack toilet paper, hand sanitizer, feminine products, razors, washcloth and towel, cosmetics, face wipes, and prescription medications.

It is important that your campsite has a fully stocked first aid kit which includes bandages, antibiotic ointment, rubber gloves, antiseptic wipes, and a small multi-tool with tweezers and scissors. Ideally, your kit will also include an assortment of basic medications like painkillers, antacids, and antihistamines.

<h2>5. Campsite essentials</h2>
Every campsite needs a good fire for warmth, light, cooking, and ambiance. One option is to bring your firewood, but that isn't allowed in all places. Another choice is to cut your firewood; in that case, you'll need to pack an ax or hatchet and a lighter or matches. You could also bring camping fire starters or charcoal to help get the flames going.

Your campsite will also need adequate lighting, which you can get from placing a few lanterns in strategic locations. Other camping essentials that should be on your packing list are flashlights, headlamps, extra batteries, duct tape, a basic toolset, trash bags, and recycling bags.
