The world is growing at a steady pace. In 1965, there were an estimated 3.325 billion people on the planet. By 2017, that number climbed to more than 7 billion. That number is going to continue to rise. Even though people reside on all seven of the Earth's continents, most of the world's population are concentrated in a few dozen cities.
01 Shanghai
The city with the densest population in the world is Shanghai with 24.1 million people. Not only is it the most populated city in the world, but it also has the largest population in Asia. Shanghai and its 18 districts lie along the East China Sea. Two of the city's districts span to nearby islands in the mouth of the Yangtze River. The northernmost portion of the city sits on Chongming Island which is also the second largest island in mainland China.
02 Beijing
Beijing is home to 18.5 million people. The capital of the People's Republic of China is located in the northern section of the country and is divided into 16 districts. Beijing's history goes back 3,000 years and is also one of the oldest cities in the world. The Great Wall of China runs through the northern areas of Beijing.
03 Karachi
Karachi, Pakistan is home to 18 million people. The capital city of the Sindh Province sits along the Arabian Sea and also houses the country's two largest seaports. Karachi is the transportation hub of Pakistan with two ports and the busiest airport in the region, Jinnah International Airport. Along with sea and air transportation, Karachi also offers an international rail link, the Thar Express.
04 Istanbul
Not only is Istanbul one of the oldest cities in the world, but it also has 14.6 million inhabitants. The Turkish city was once the capital of some of civilizations greatest nations, the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empires. Istanbul is part of Turkey's Marmara Region and is in the north-western area of the country. The transcontinental city sits between Europe and Asia on the Bosporus Strait that divides the two continents.
05 Dhaka
Dhaka, a city established in 17th century Bangladesh. This major Asian metropolitan area has 14.5 million residents. Also the capital city of Bangladesh, it's located in the south-central region of the country along the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, and Shitalakshya rivers in the Ganges Delta. The city is sometimes referred to by its original name, Dacca.
06 Tokyo
Tokyo on the largest of the four islands that encompass Japan has 13.6 million residents. Japan's capital city is made up of 23 special wards, 26 inner city areas, five towns, and eight villages. Most of the towns and villages are located on the city's numerous small islands in the Pacific Ocean.
07 Moscow
The capital of Russia and the country's most populated city also holds the title as the seventh largest population in the world. Moscow is home to 13.1 million residents. The Eastern European City sits on the banks of Russia's central most river, the Moskva. There are 49 bridges in the city that cross the river. Moscow also holds the award for being the coldest megacity on the planet.
08 Manila
Manila, another densely populated island city, is home to 12.8 million people living there. Located on the shoreline of Manila Bay, the Pasig River divides the city. With more than 42,000 people per square kilometer, it's also the most densely populated city in the world. Manila has been the main city in the Philippines for the past 400 years.
09 Tianjin
With 12.7 million residents, Tianjin, China, it sits in the northern coastal region between the Ziya and Yongding Rivers and is one of its busiest trading ports. Part of the Shi region, it's one of five national central cities and is the third largest metro area in China. Tianjin is divided into seven districts and three counties.
10 Mumbai
First established by the British in the 17th century, Mumba has 12.4 million residents. Also known as Bombay, Mumbai is on the Konkan coast next to the Ulhas River. It's is also the largest city in India and the second most populated metro area in the country. Mumbai has two distinct regions, the city area, and the suburban district.
