The 125-acre Phoenix Zoo is the country's most extensive non-profit, privately-owned zoo and it's just southeast of Scottsdale. You'll find more than 1,400 animals here, including African lions, Andean bears, flamingos, gray wolves, ostriches, giraffes, and otters. The zoo has four main sections, or "trails": Arizona Trail, Africa Trail, Tropics Trail, and Children's Trail, which even has a petting zoo. The Phoenix Zoo has focused on conservation since it opened in 1962 and is a sanctuary for unwanted or endangered animals.
