At about a five-mile round trip, the hike to Tom's Thumb is moderately challenging — but your efforts are rewarded with stunning views. The smooth, gravelly path ascends at a steady incline and gains almost 1,400 feet in elevation when you reach the rock formation that gives the trail its name. A shaded area near the trailhead has restrooms and informational kiosks, perfect for road trippers. However, there's a good chance you won't be the only one getting a workout.
