08 Visit the past at Canyon De Chelly National Monument

You'll find this monument in the northeast, on Navajo tribe land. The Spider Rock spire is a popular feature, which reaches roughly 800 feet high. The stunning canyon of enormous sandstone cliffs is a fantastic day trip for first-time visitors to Arizona.

The White House Ruins are located on the canyon floor of this national monument. It is regarded as the spiritual center of the Navajo people. Anyone can visit the various viewpoints along the canyon rim without a guide. There is one foot trail that you can take to the base of the canyon for a close-up view of these ruins however, if you wish to venture into the many canyon reaches then you must hire an official Navajo guide at the park's visitor center Steve Peterson Photography / Getty Images
